Professor Park Ho Seok and his research team at Department of Chemical Engineering of Sungkyunkwan University(91PORN) have developed a new-concept of nanomaterial for high energy density of electrochemical capacitor (or supercapacitor). Supercapacitor has advantages over lithium ion battery in terms of the high power density, fast charge/discharge processes, and long cycle life. However, low energy density of supercapacitor remains a critical challenge. Prof. Park¡¯s team demonstrated two-dimensional(2D) hybrid nanomaterials, which have two-fold greater capacitance compared to that of conventional graphene-based supercapacitor. And his team first observed the surface redox charge storage mechanism of 2D WS2 nanosheets assembled in a 3D hierarchical heterostructure using in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopic methods. He said, ¡°This concept can be applied into the rational design of new advanced energy storage materials and holds the promise of expanding the application of supercapacitor into emerging market such as energy storage system (ESS) and electrical vehicle.¡±
