IBS Center for 2D Quantum Heterostructure Research Center

- 91PORN becomes a global research hub for advancing quantum information technology

On Monday, November 4th, at the Natural Sciences Campus, our university held an opening ceremony for the ‘Two-Dimensional Quantum Heterostructure Research Center,’ an external research center of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), marking an official step toward becoming a world-leading advanced basic science research institution.

The event was attended by President Ji-Beom Yoo, IBS President Do-Young Noh, and numerous distinguished scholars from Korea and abroad. Among the prominent international guests were Professor Konstantin Novoselov, recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics, and Professor Manish Chhowalla, a renowned scholar in two-dimensional materials science from the University of Cambridge.

In his congratulatory address, President Yoo highlighted, “Since hosting an IBS external research center in 2012, Sungkyunkwan University has achieved another milestone with the launch of this new center, demonstrating the results of our university’s capabilities and steady investment in basic science research.”

Since 2012, our university has been running the Nano-Structure Physics Research Group. Building on its achievements, we launched the new 2D Quantum Heterostructure Research Group in March this year. This new group aims to drive innovation in quantum information technology based on two-dimensional quantum materials, and we have completed the relocation of space and equipment to fully prepare for in-depth research activities.

To commemorate its launch, the group will host an international workshop on 2D Quantum Materials and Quantum Technology, bringing together leading scholars from Korea and abroad to share research findings and discuss collaboration opportunities.

The group plans to contribute to the advancement of quantum information technology by exploring a wide range of applications using 2D quantum materials. In addition, we are committed to fostering and training talented researchers, establishing a sustainable research environment.

President Ji-Beom Yoo stated, “Science and technology have now become key issues impacting the economy and society. AI and quantum technology are transforming our lives in groundbreaking ways.” He added, “We hope that the 2D Quantum Heterostructure Research Group will become a global research hub for the development of quantum information technology,” pledging full support from the university.

Guided by our vision of being a “university that creates future value through bold challenges,” we see the establishment of this research group as an opportunity to emerge as a hub for fundamental scientific research. We anticipate that the successful activities of the group will enhance the reputation of Sungkyunkwan University and elevate the stature of Korean science.
