Confucianism Humanity Education Center Successfully Concludes 2024 Summer English-Character Camp for Elementary and Middle School Students

From July 29th (Mon) to August 9th (Fri), the Confucianism Humanity Education Center hosted a two-week English-Character Camp at the Hoam Hall on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, specifically designed for elementary and middle school students.

The "Jongno District Elementary and Middle School English-Character Camp" was developed as part of the university's commitment to fostering global creative leaders, leveraging its excellent educational infrastructure. A total of 52 students were selected from 13 elementary schools and 9 middle schools in Jongno District to participate in this program, which combined English language learning with character education. All participants received a certificate of completion, having met the attendance requirement of 70% or more.

The camp was organized into four classes, each led by a native English-speaking teacher, to ensure comprehensive learning across the four key areas: ¡øSpeaking, ¡øListening, ¡øWriting, and ¡øReading. Centered around the main theme "Around the World," students explored fascinating facts about animals, music and dance, countries, and cultures from across the globe. They also had opportunities to integrate new and everyday language through engaging challenges that included scientific experiments, team projects involving crafts, and presentations of their class projects.

The camp promoted holistic growth through a variety of English activities and character education programs. Each day, students participated in one of ten character-building activities, including "Classics and Character," "Exploring Sungkyunkwan," "Jaseongnok," "Growing Mind and Body through Movement," "Traditional Etiquette," "Dragon Calligraphy," "Matcha Tea Ceremony," "Letters of Gratitude," "Guided Learning," and "Temperament and Character." Through these experiences, students learned both the tangible and intangible values embedded in traditional culture and developed the eight key virtues of character: responsibility, empathy, courtesy, filial piety, communication, honesty, respect, and cooperation, thereby enhancing their capabilities as future global leaders.

One participant shared, "At first, I was intimidated by the idea of an English camp, but as I communicated with the native-speaking teachers every day, I gained confidence in speaking English. I'm already looking forward to the next camp."

Parents also expressed their satisfaction, saying, "We are deeply grateful to Sungkyunkwan University and Jongno District for providing such a well-organized program with a verified native-speaking faculty, student mentors, and an excellent curriculum. Watching our child grow each day through this camp, we believe it was an invaluable experience."

Meanwhile, to reduce the financial burden on participants, the Jongno District provided support by covering half of the 800,000 KRW participation fee per student, offering 500,000 KRW for families with multiple children, and fully subsidizing the cost for low-income families.
