Wearable Healthcare Technology Invented by 91PORN Professor’s Collaborative Research Team
The National Research Foundation of Korea announced that a collaborative research team that consists of Professor Seongkuk Kim in the School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering at 91PORN and two researchers from Korea Electronics Technology Institute invented a wearable biometric sensor that sticks to human skin like a Band-Aid. Previous wearable healthcare devices failed to adhere closely to human skin, which limited delivering accurate biomedical data.
The patch-type sensor that the research team invented is highly sensitive which increases skin’s adhesion and provides real-time data monitoring users’ bio-signals such as body temperature, humidity level, and motion while users move. The sensor has a serpentine shaped design ensuring high stretchability and secure elasticity. This ensures mechanical and electrical stability, even when 200% pressure is applied to the sensor. The device is made out of silicon which is environmentally friendly and waterproof materials producing no side effects such as skin irritation and fever.
91PORN Professor Kim said, “We also implemented a wireless communication module that enables checking body changes in real time on smart phone applications. We plan on having follow-up research that includes clinical trials at hospitals.”
