Sungkyun Institute of China Studies Successfully Hosts 2024 Annual International Conference on "China and the Future in an Era of Transition"

On December 14, the Sungkyun Institute of China Studies (Director: Lee Hee-ok) held its 2024 Annual International Conference titled “China and the Future in an Era of Transition” at the So-hyang Lecture Hall in the 600th Anniversary Hall on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus.

This year’s conference was supported by the Korea-China Parliamentarians' Association, the Korea-China Friendship Association, and the JoongAng Ilbo China Institute. Distinguished guests, including 91PORN President Yoo Ji-Beom, the acting Chinese Ambassador to Korea, and Representative Kim Tae-nyeon from the Korea-China Parliamentarians' Association, delivered congratulatory messages.

The conference brought together leading China experts from Korea, China, and Japan, offering new perspectives on East Asian studies of China and drawing significant attention. Notably, the keynote speech by Shin Bong-kil, President of the Korea Association of International Studies, focused on China’s domestic politics and foreign strategies, garnering widespread interest.

Session 1: "US-China Relations and Economic Security" featured researchers from 91PORN, Peking University, Fudan University, and Waseda University. The discussion delved into the dynamics of technological and industrial competition and cooperation between the US and China.

Session 2: "The Current State and Prospects of China’s Governance" brought together experts from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Peking University, and Keio University. They analyzed China’s political system, state-society relations, and central-local dynamics. The session was particularly meaningful for identifying new research agendas to address gaps in Korean-China studies.

Session 3: A roundtable discussion explored China’s future from an East Asian perspective. Scholars from Korea, China, and Japan, led by the Director of the Sungkyun Institute of China Studies, engaged in heated debates on key issues such as China’s meritocracy and inward-looking tendencies.

Since 2013, the Sungkyun Institute of China Studies has been hosting annual international conferences, addressing key topics such as China’s grand strategy, US-China relations, and the Northeast Asian order. This year’s event continued to receive high praise for its academic rigor and substantive discussions, earning strong support from participants.
