Six Teams from the School of Arts and the School of Global Convergence

Participate in the Renowned Media Art Festival, 'ARS Electronica Festival'

From September 4 to 8, 2024, six student teams from our university officially exhibited their works at the world's largest media art festival, "ARS Electronica Festival 2024," held in Linz, Austria.

The School of Arts (Dean Ji-Sook Jeong) and the School of Global Convergence (Dean Eun-Seok Lee) participated as official "partner universities" in the festival’s Campus section.

The teams presented works that reinterpreted this year's festival theme, "Hope: who will turn the tide," using innovative technologies such as AI, VR, and projection mapping.

The festival featured 1,260 artists, scientists, developers, and entrepreneurs from 67 countries, attracting 112,000 visitors from around the globe. Sungkyunkwan University sent five professors, including Professor Chang-Jun Lee and Professor Hyuk Byun, and 20 students from the Culture and Technology Convergence Program in the Global Convergence School, and the Department of Film. They actively engaged in networking with relevant local institutions and universities.

Supported by the Cultural and Arts Media Convergence Center's mentoring program and the Global Capstone Link project, the College of Arts presented three works:

¡øSOARA Project: A project that delivers a message of comfort using a virtual human character. ¡ø Formless: An expression of the Buddhist concept of "self-liberation" using AI and projection technologies. ¡ø 70mK (70 million Koreans): A VR version of a project that maps the consciousness of Koreans through 1,608 interviews.

The School of Global Convergence showcased three projects:

¡øWhat We Love: A warning about humanity's sustainability through AI. ¡øMiracle on the Han River: Suicide or Sustain: A VR work that reflects on South Korea's rapid economic development and its cultural and social impact. ¡øBloomerry: A piece highlighting the importance of social connections through interactions between visitors and objects.

At the event, the School of Arts and the School of Global Convergence signed an MOU with the University of Art and Design Linz, which hosts the Festival Campus. Under this MOU, Sungkyunkwan University will continue to participate as a partner university in the ARS Electronica Festival each year. Additionally, both universities plan to expand student exchange programs, share curricula, and collaborate in various joint courses, research, and artistic activities, including co-teaching.

Dean Ji-Sook Jeong of the School of Arts stated, "Participation in the ARS Electronica Festival and the signing of the MOU have elevated our university's global standing and provided our students with invaluable experiences on the international stage." Dean Jang-Hyun Kim of the School of Global Convergence added, "We will continue to cultivate global talent through ongoing international collaboration and innovative educational programs."
