"Island Story," directed by Prof. Kyungsung Lee (School of Art – Theater), will rise to stage again.
The production "Island Story" has been selected as the official invitation to the 2022 Seoul International Performing Arts Festival and the 2023 Seoul Cultural Foundation's artistic creation support. This work portrays the narrative of individuals who came back to their ancestral land to pay respects to their father’s remains, after a period of 70 years since the Jeju 4.3 incident took place. It is a work that embodies various materials such as real-time video technology, radio transmission, doll objects, soil, and interviews with survivors.
Creative VaQi, a theater company represented by Professor Lee, has visited Jeju Island several times over the past two years to conduct interviews, filming, and collect objects. At the time of its premiere in 2022, it was evaluated that it opened a new aesthetic horizon in turning the Jeju 4.3 incident into a play and is currently planning world-leading theater festivals and tour performances.
